Free SEO

This site is a free SEO resource for all with an interest in increasing the revenue from their website, whether you are selling a product or a service. Do not pay good money to dubious companies promising to help you achieve the same as I describe here. You can easily do it yourself and that for a fraction of the cost.

On this site I will tell you how you can search engine optimize (SEO) your website for less than 200-300 USD. Of course you can do it without any cost at all, however, I recommend you to use two special and easy tools named "IBusiness Promotor" (IBP) and a simple software program named "Directory Submitter”. You can download a free demo of the software here. I use these tools to achieve the best, and most importantly, the fastest optimization of a website. As I said, you don’t have to buy them, but it makes things so much easier and faster. These tools cost approximately 200 USD, but that is a small investment when you can reach the front page on Google in just 1-3 months. Believe me when I say these tools are a very good investment.

Whether you want to use these tools or not the path to success online is the same as in the ‘real’ world. It is all about letting people know of the products and services you offer. If no one knows you no one will buy your products. I will explain how you attract visitors to your website.
My claim is that even the least experienced Internet user will be able to achieve great results. It is one thing to create a website, it is another thing to attract visitors.

Not all the methods I mention on this site are equally relevant all the time. Unfortunately it is not public knowledge how Google’s search algorithms works and how different elements are accentuated. However, the methods I explain on this site are estimates from experts who have had good experiences and results with these methods. Before we begin I will make one thing clear: You have to work to succeed. It does take some work, but you do not have to be an expert to perform this work. I will seek to explain the methods in a way that all should be able to follow.

1. Find 10 keywords

Before you start you have to find 10 keywords that fits your website or your products. You have to find 10 words that you believe people will search for on Google when searching for a website such as yours. If you e.g. sell glasses it could be words like:

• Glasses
• Sunglasses
• Goggles
• Spectacles
• Eyeglasses
• Contact lens
• Contact lenses
• Long-sighted
• Short-sighted

It can be very difficult to find the right words because you have to choose the words people most often enter in Google. So how do you find out which words people use? This is where I use the iBusiness Promotor" (IBP) tool. This tool will tell you how much a certain word will cost in Google AdWords. The higher the price the better the word is because the price reflects who often the word is used in Google. Of course you can find the words without this tool but I recommend it because it is an excellent tool. It takes less than three minutes and it never fails. You enter the word you want to test in “iBusiness Promotor (IBP)” and then you choose the 4-5 most expensive words. These words are the most searched for. In the glasses example the words are:

  • Contact Lens
  • Sunglasses
  • Glasses
  • Eyeglasses

When you have found the words you enter them one by one in Google and analyses the top 5 websites on the front page. You do this in order to find out how good your chances are to surpass them on Google’s front page. I will tell you how to do this next.

2. Analyze your competition before you optimize your website

The first step on the road to success online is to find out what your options are. You are not the only one who have learned or are learning how to optimize a website so you have to analyze the competition in order to find the best place for your business.
If you want to avoid working hours on analyzing the websites to learn what you are up against you can use the SEO tool “IBP”. This tool enables you expose your competition and get an insight in what to do in order to surpass it. Of course it is possible to do this without the “IBP” tool, it is just much more time consuming and comprehensive work.

A quick example of “IBP” efficiency

When I search for the keyword ‘Glasses’ in Google, the website “www.glassesdirect.co.uk” is the number 4 on the front page. Then I enter the full website address in "IBP"and click on ‘inlinks’ (inlink = how many links are there to this website). This is relevant because it is one of the most important factors in ensuring visibility on Google. The SEO tool ”IBP” tells me that there are 1500 links to glassesdirect.co.uk and 760 of these have different IP addresses. If I enter the website that was number 5 on the search I performed earlier I see that it has 11.000 inlinks.

Why is this website not number one if it has so many inlinks?

The reason is that of the11.000 inlinks just 500 are from different IP addresses, therefore most of the inlinks come from the same IP address (meaning the same website). This tells me that Google values inlinks from different websites (IP addresses) higher than inlinks from the same website. I will elaborate more on inlinks and IP addresses later. You now know that you need more than 760 relevant websites to link to your in order to surpass website which is number 4 when searching on ‘Glasses’. You have to do this with all the 4 keywords you chose in step 1. You then have to work with the 3 words that require less inlinks in order to attain a good placement on Google.

3. Website optimization

Optimizing your website is also known as SEO, Search Engine Optimization. It is all about getting your website displayed on Google’s front page and preferably high up as well. It is a fact that most people that search the Internet using Google never click past the first page. On this website I take point of departure in optimizing your website for Google. Google is the biggest and most used search engine, furthermore, most of the processes I describe here are the same when optimizing for search engines such as MSN, Yahoo and AltaVista.
Within website optimization there are two concepts:

• On-page optimizing
• Off-page optimizing

Onpage optimizing means to optimize your website itself. This could be by choosing the right title-tags or the graphic layout. I will explain these concepts later.
Offpage optimizing means optimizing your website with the use of other websites. That is all the factors that relates to your website which are not actually on your website. E.g. other websites that link to yours.

4. On-page optimizing

The following elements of onpage optimizing are listed chronologically so the most important are mentioned first.

4.1 Content on your website
Google is a very intelligent search engine that gets smarter all the time. Google not only scans your website every time it comes by it. It actually “reads” the content. Therefore it is important that your website contains relevant and original text. The reason it has to be original is that Google ‘punishes’ you if you have copied the text from another website. Furthermore, Google counts the words on your website. Google deems a page irrelevant if it contains less than 250 so make sure that you have at least 250 words on each page on your website. You also have to make sure your body text fits with the title tags of the page. I will explain this later.

4.2 Make your website visible
When Google’s search robot passes by your website it starts out on your front page. When it scans through your front page it looks for links to other pages on your website. It is very important that these links are not made using Flash (animated) or Java (moving links e.g. drop down menus). Google does not recognize these techniques therefore you will miss out on Google indexing your sub pages. If you already have Flash or Java on your website it is important that you create static links to all your subpages in order to get Google to index all of your website. This can be done by e.g. creating a discrete element on the bottom of your page where you have a link to all your pages.

4.3 Title tags on your website

Title tags are the words you see in the top of your browser. It is a line of code that gives every page a title that is shown in the top of your browser (as shown on the image). If you code your website yourself you have to use <title>Your Title</title> in order to get a title. If you cannot code get your friend or IT department to change your website to include a relevant title on every page on your website. Google prefers short and precise titles that are relevant to the content of the page. Therefore it is important to use only the most important words. If we use the example from before with the “Glasses example” then you have to use the 3-4 keywords you came up with as titles because these words are precise and descriptive. If the 3 key words are Contact lens, Glasses and sunglasses then use the word Contact Lens as a title on the front page and use the words sunglasses and glasses on the subpages instead of e.g. ‘cheap contact lens that looks great on you’.

Why?
Because Google looks at the number of words that are relevant to a search. If you search for ‘Contact lens’ then Google sees titles containing just ‘Contact lens’ as 100% relevant to your search as the search word and the title match. This means that Google will display the page that has the best match between search word and the title of the page. The title ‘cheap contact lens that looks great on you’ will have a lower relevance according to Google because of the extra 6 words. A page with a long title will most likely be placed after the page with a 100% match. To conclude; Keep your titles short and relevant. If you choose to put more words in your title remember to separate them with a hyphen instead of words like ‘and’ or ‘or’. If you use to many words the important key words will loose their effect.
Also you should not use the same key words in different titles. Instead you should use synonyms for the word you believe people will search for. Do not use your company name as a title. Nobody searches for it anyway.

4.4 H1, h2 and h3 headings

H1, h2 and h3 are types of headings that are used on websites. If you do not know how to work with these headings have a friend or your web-department do it for you. The work needed is not too comprehensive as it is not very relevant, but every bit of optimization counts. If you use h1 for your headings Google will see this as more important than your body text and will emphasize it. H2 is less relevant than h1 but more than h3, but h3 is still more relevant than your body text. So make sure you use some of your key words as headings.

4.5 Internal links
If you have a certain page you wish to focus on, e.g. a page called ‘Buy Contact lenses’ it is a good idea to link to this page from your front page and all your sub pages. This has to be done with a link text (anchor text) that contains a search word people will use to find your website. This could be a link text called ‘Buy contact lenses’.

Tips to a better onpage optimization
Minimum once a month you should add text to your website or re-arrange it a little. Google loves change and will reward you for it.

What NOT to do when doing onpage optimization
It is foolish to try and trick Google. I have to emphasize that if you cheat you will be punished. If Google finds out you are using unfair tricks it removes your website from the search engine and you have to start all over again. So NEVER do the following:

Do not get inlinks from link farms (the ones that offer you 40.000 links for $49).

Never use hidden text on your website (white text on a white background or a very small text that is practically unreadable. Google checks for this and you will be punished for it).

Never use text outside the image. Google will see this right away.

Avoid links from unprofessional websites or sites that are not relevant to your subject, as Google does not see them as relevant.

Avoid links from so-called bad neighbors, websites that has a bad influence on your website. (By entering your own website in the SEO tool “IBP” you can see if you link to bad neighbors or if bad neighbors are linking to you).

Do not use Flash or Java, Google does not understand it and therefore cannot read it.

Make sure you do not have ‘dead links’ (links to pages that no longer exists). Google disapproves of this. “IBP” SEO tool can check whether you have dead links.

Do not exaggerate the use of your keywords in your body text. Google sees this as spam.
Use different titles for all your pages. Google hates all forms of repetition and copying.

5. Off-page optimizing

5.1 Inlinks
The most important thing in website optimization is websites that link to your website without you linking back to them. The more one-way links you can get to your website the better. You have to bear in mind that the websites that link to you are relevant to your website or uses the same or similar contend and keywords. Furthermore, it is positive to get inlinks from different IP addresses (different websites). Google rates few links from different websites higher than many links from the same website.
A good start would be to sign up on dmoz.org. Here you can enter your website under ‘suggest a site’. Dmoz.org is a good place to get links from as it has a good pagerank on Google. Here you use the SEO tool Directory Submitter that gives you a great helping hand, and many relevant one way inlinks.

5.2 Pagerank
Pagerank is an index Google uses to indicate how popular and trustworthy a website is. The more websites with a high pagerank that link to you the better it is for you. Google search robot updates websites with a high pagerank more often than websites with a pagerank of 0-4. Therefore, if you wish to have your new website visible in Google’s index in a few days it is best to get a website with a pagerank higher than 6 to link to your website. If you do not know any websites with a high pagerank there are companies offering to sell links. (Remember never to buy links from link farms). You can see the website’s pageranks by downloading Google Toolbar as shown on the picture.
Using the SEO tool “Directory Submitter” you can quickly get hundreds of relevant inlinks. It is brilliant. Earlier I used weeks to find relevant websites with a high pagerank I could link from. Directory Submitter is a tool that can save you a lot of time. This is also a good way to get a lot of relevant websites to link to your website and it is not a link farm.

5.3 Anchor text (the name of a link to your website)

If you have more websites it is a good idea to get these websites to link to the one that is most important. Wherever you can you should use a keyword as anchor text. It is best to use the keyword you would like people to find you with. Using the “Glasses site” as an example again you should use ‘Buy Glasses’.

Link, link and more links
It is simple to link with the software “Directory Submitter” so take advantage of it. You simply type in your keywords and some relevant text, and then the software submits your site to over 350 relevant sites.
Get into the habit of adding more inlinks every week. With an hour a week you will get a great result. You reap what you sow, and it takes time to optimize your website but it pays out in the end. And I cannot stress it enough; I am very happy with the two SEO tools I use. They make the process very simple and help people with less insight into search optimization achieve great results. And it saves you months of work.
